Open Science

Research is increasingly digital, complex, and expensive; however, the prices of scientific journals are increased every year even more than the previous one. Therefore, it’s time to break the ‘mortal embrace’ that stifles the production of knowledge. Europe proposes a scenario where the way of doing science and disseminating its results change completely, although the traditional, profitable model for large academic publishers is really a hard enemy to beat.

A couple of years ago, 13 European funding agencies came together in order to implement a new Open Science plan according to which the results of publicly funded projects should be published in open access journals and platforms. ERC participates in this initiative. The idea was trying to avoid something that used to drive researchers and funding agencies crazy; prior to Open Access policies, the work of researchers financed with public funds was sent to private journals that reviewed them and published their contents in a closed way Thus, to access the knowledge generated by their scientists, the countries had to buy it But, what does really mean “Open Science”?.It is a new way of approaching scientific research. Open Science advocates, for a responsible research model that ensures the return on the investment made with public funds, in which the methods and results are accessible to all, that stimulates mutual, inclusive, transparent and reproducible learning, and that is useful for the advancement of societyle back from these journals. Doesn´t it sound a little bit strange?.
